Our master bedroom has always been the least of our concerns since we moved into our house seven years ago. During that time we were both finishing college, getting married and having another set of twins! Once I started to notice that EVERY room of the house was getting taken over by toys, I wanted at least one room that was completely mine.
For the longest time we didn’t even have a bed frame, we slept on a mattress on the floor. I don’t think I’ve ever owned a proper dresser either. Our folded clothes got placed wherever there was an open spot or just stayed in laundry baskets. The furniture we did have was all mis-matched things we had from our parent’s houses. We are both almost 30 so it was definitely time to get an “adult” bedroom, not something that looked like we were in a college frat house.
The overall “theme” of the room is minimilistic, light, subtle Harry Potter. Haha – not really sure if that counts as a theme but it’s pretty much my exact style. I don’t like a lot of clutter or dark colors. I wanted everything to flow together without adding a bunch of crap just for decor purposes. All the HP touches are almost unnoticeable but definitely present.
The first thing we purchased was our bed. I fell in love with the ‘grand’ style of it. The huge headboard is a statement piece in the room. We have a box spring and an extra tall mattress so it sits high off the ground. I’ve noticed that beds are made SO low to the ground lately and I’m not a fan! The sign above the bed is from a local shop and is one of the many HP inspired items in the room.

Since our bed is so high off the ground we couldn’t find bedside tables that were the right height. Cody ended up making these floating shelves and I couldn’t be more happy with them. We stained them gray.
This little area is for extra storage. We keep items that won’t fit in our main dresser and all my clutches/wallets. I also keep our little peg family on here 🙂
I LOVE the Ikea dresser! It’s tall, the drawers open smoothly and it has tons of room. I even ordered this exact dresser for my daughter’s bedroom because I loved it so much. I try not to keep a bunch of junk on top of it because I like the minimalistic look. A couple picture frames and a basket is all I need. I also have a glass dish where I keep my earrings – another HP item! The muave hanging wall tassel is from Home Goods, so I don’t have a link!
We used to have dark brown blinds but to keep with the “light and bright” theme of the room, we put up gray curtains. I love them! They block out light so well! We have a lot of pops of gold around the room so I went with gold rods.
Instead of hanging a bunch of pictures on the wall, I decided I wanted a floating shelf with frames. I loved how it turned out! The pops of gold are there and also some more hidden Harry Potter pieces.
Lastly, we changed up our ceiling fan. Switching light fixtures can really change the vibe of the room! Our fan was so ugly and didn’t fit our new room at all – this one is perfect. I love the grey blades on the fan.
We really love how this room turned out. There are NO TOYS allowed in here. After all the kids are asleep for the night, I love jumping in bed, turning on a lamp, get the fan going, and reading a book. It’s so cozy and everything I’d hope it would be.
I also filmed a vlog tour if you’d like to see a real life perspective! Watch it below.
