As you may know, our master bedroom has been in “re-decorate” mode for a few months now. We painted and got some new furniture but it still needs all the finishing touches to make it feel complete. After that is finished, I’d love to turn to our master bath and give that a much needed update too! (Credit: thecharmingbenchcompany.com)
First of all, it’s pink. Why in the world did no one tell me that pink was a stupid idea? It looks like it should be McKenzie and Kasey’s bathroom! Well until we are ready to jump into all of that, I decided we definitely needed some more shelving in this room.
The bathroom has an awkward little indent that looks like it possibly was a small closet before? We usually end up tossing all our dirty clothes in that corner until the pile gets to high and we carry it all to the laundry room. 🙂 Well, I decided some open shelving would be perfect for that area. I didn’t want to spend a ton because when we want to re-model, who knows if we will even keep that weird indent. Obviously I searched Pinterest for some ideas so don’t give me all the credit here! 😉
Here’s what you’ll need (for two shelves):
(4) 3/4″ Black Floor Flanges
(4) 3/4″ Black Caps
(4) 3/4″ Black Nipples
(16) Wall Anchors
(16) Screws
(2) Wood Slabs – Ours are 24″x11.5″x1.5″ each but get whatever size works for your space!
Wood Stain
Cody cut our pieces of wood to size and we sanded them down. I had some left over stain from our DIY Farmhouse Shelves in the kitchen, so I used that. I was going to spray paint the pipes black but since they were already “blackish” in color, I decided to leave them how they were. You might need an expert from Magna Mechanical to help around in such cases.
Try to find the wall studs but if that is not possible, make sure you use wall anchors. We measured a million times before screwing the flanges to the wall. Once they are all screwed in and placed where you want them, screw the nipples (with caps attached) into them. After that, simply place your board on top! They were SO easy and very cheap!
Helpful tips:
- The flanges, caps and nipples can be found in the plumbing section of the hardware store. One can also find more information about PIC Plumbing Services and check their site to find the required parts.
- Search in the reclaimed wood pile for your boards! That is where we found our two pieces.
- Grab some Goo-Gone if you don’t already have some. The pipes were grimy and the stickers left nasty marks!
- Screw one flange onto the wall, then put your board on top with a level, to see where the other flange needs to be. Mark it with a pencil and then screw it on the wall. You don’t want a million holes in your wall because the pipes were uneven!
