I CANNOT believe that I’ve been painting peg dolls for a full year! This hobby quickly turned into something bigger than I ever imagined it would be. I started posting pictures of the ones I made for my own kids and then the messages from other people came rolling in. Therefore, I decided to open an Etsy shop! I honestly didn’t know how well I’d do but I thought, hey, if I could get a couple orders a month that would be cool and it would give me something to do.
I had absolutely no painting background at all. I just went for it and hoped for the best. I didn’t care about quality at first because I thought my kids were going to be the only ones playing with them. Check out some of my very first pegs I painted! I have come a LONG way! You may notice that I used to paint “skin”. I stopped doing that because I prefer seeing the natural wood poking through. Do you agree?
I cringe at some of those photos but it’s also cool to see how far I’ve come. My technique and strokes improve the more and more I paint. I can’t wait to see where I’m at in a couple years!
I do love adding new characters to the shop all the time. My most popular are the superheroes and princesses. My favorite items currently in my shop are the Mini Princess Sets! They are so cute!
I’ve been trying to add other items to my shop as well. This year we added peg doll “pouches”. These work great for keeping all your little people in a safe spot or for travel. I also added wooden bead keychains! These can be used as zipper pulls too (which work nice on the peg pouch!).
One of my favorite parts of this process is when I seal the pegs up and get them ready for packaging! It’s fun seeing the finished product and putting my logo on it. Very rewarding!
Working in the flea markets has been really fun for me too! Preparing a huge inventory of pegs, setting up the table, meeting customers, etc. I’ve learned a lot from other vendors I’ve met and it helps me see what pegs draw people in and which ones aren’t of interest to people.
Overall, its been a great year! Painting pegs gives me a creative outlet and I’ve really enjoyed having the shop the past year. I can’t wait for 2020!
