If you are a twin mama then you already know they are huge attention-getters just about anywhere you go. You would not believe how many people will stop you when they see those two car seats. It’s like we are a circus pulling up and everyone wants to see the shit show coming through. Cody and I always laugh after someone stops to chat because most likely we just answered all the same questions in the last aisle. I really try not to be rude because I know people are just curious, especially if they aren’t around twins a lot. Man oh man though, sometimes I just want to pin a poster board to the stroller with all the answers already on it. Here are my most commonly asked questions…
Are they twins?
I always want to say something very sarcastic to this but I can never want to come off as rude. Yes, they are twins. Eight months old. This is usually when McKenzie and Kasey come running around the corner and you can start to see the tables turning in their heads. Wait a minute…
You have two sets of twins?! How did that happen?
Yup, I sure do and I have NO idea. What is strange about my situation is that my first set was from a previous relationship (I usually don’t talk about this with strangers but thought I’d share with you guys). So clearly the deciding twin factor is me. My OB explained that there is a good chance I release two eggs at a time. Lucky me!
Are they both girls? Two boys?
Obviously if I’m out with McKenzie and Kasey I don’t get asked this question anymore but Harper and Mason get it every. single. time. Mason always happens to be holding a pink toy or is using the pink blanket so he is always mistaken as a girl. Ha! Poor boy. 🙂
Do twins run in your family?
I do have some distant twins on my dad’s side of the family that I have never met. My mom’s half sister also has a set of twins.
Did you have them natural?
I cringe every time someone asks me this. What do you mean by natural? If you mean did I conceive them the old fashion way, then yes. But gees, if I did become pregnant by the help of IVF I would be very offended/hurt by this question. OR did you mean natural by did I have them vaginally? The answer to that is no. I’ve had two c-sections.
Are they identical?
M & K got this A LOT. No, they are not identical. Yes, they do look very similar. Most people couldn’t tell them apart until they turned six. Surprisingly, M & H get this question too. A boy and a girl CANNOT be identical. Come on people.
Do they have their own language?
This is actually funny because M & K did have their own language. When they were just learning to talk they would use words that weren’t really words but both of them seemed to know what it meant. For example, “inny” would be said and they would both switch the toys they were holding. Clearly it meant something along the lines of “my turn” or “trade”.
How do you do it? I could never do it.
Uhhh well I didn’t really have a choice. Obviously my life changed drastically when I had two pregnancies but four babies. You adapt and make it work. Now that M & K are 8 years old, I’m SO glad they are twins. They have this built in playmate which is so incredible because they keep each other occupied. They learn from each other and love each other so hard. It’s truly amazing to watch their relationship. I’m anxious to see how the brother/sister bond will play out as they get older.
Do they wake each other up at night when they cry?
Sometimes. For the babies, if one wakes up and needs a bottle I usually wake the other one up too. If you don’t do this their eating/changing schedule will get messed up and that is what you DON’T want to happen.
You must be so busy?!
Yes, I’m extremely tired, barely showered, and hungry. 😉 Honestly though, at this point in my life (having two 8 month olds and two 8 year olds) I would go crazy if I had to go to work every day as well. The moms who are the busiest are those working mamas. They go to work all day, have to come home to cook dinner, clean, do laundry, play with their kids etc., and do it all before bedtime. I get tired just thinking about it. Working mamas, you the real MVPs.
*Please remember if you are the ones asking the questions, don’t be too invasive (question #5 is too invasive!). Also, NEVER and I mean NEVER, under any circumstance stick your hands in the car seat to touch a strangers baby. Especially when the car seats covers are on, do NOT pull them down in order to look at the babies. You may or may not get your hand slapped away.*
