GUESS WHAT! Samantha has a discharge date!
April 9th is suppose to be the day she gets to make the transition back home. Thank goodness because I haven’t seen her in two weeks! My parents aren’t even going to see her right now either due to COVID-19.
She has a phone in her room so we can still call her and she can call us. Having no visitors doesn’t seem to be bothering her, which is good. It means that we don’t have new pictures to share (these photos are from the last day my dad went) and we aren’t as involved with her therapies.
They obviously think she’s doing well in all therapies because they finally set the discharge date. Before this week is was always up in the air.
She still has a 1:1 sitter in the room with her to make sure she doesn’t fall and assist her with basic things. This is one reason that the transition home is kind of scary for us. She doesn’t have her full memory back and still forgets things from day to day.
My parents will obviously be there to help her but they still have her two babies and both have to go back to work. I don’t think leaving her home alone yet is an option. We have to figure all that out. They also don’t have a bedroom on the main floor, so we have to worry about the stairs and navigating around the house. She does have a helmet that is to be worn when she’s not in bed. This is important because she is coming home with her skull missing. Again, we don’t know when that will be put back in. As much as we want her home and are very happy she is – it opens the door for a whole new set of stressors and uncertainty.
The preliminary hearing was held today (Friday). Due to the virus they only allowed 10 people in the courtroom total. We nominated my dad to be the person to go. They had witnesses come in and speak. We didn’t really learn anything different besides a few new details. They are sending this case to trial so I will be able to go to those hearings (HOPEFULLY CORONA!!!) and hear the witnesses first hand. The judge lowered the defendant’s bail to $300,000 from the original $500,000. Other than that, I don’t have much to share from it.
Sorry this update wasn’t as detailed as the others. It sucks not being able to see her and witness things for myself. At least she’s coming home soon!!
